Junior Birdman
Wm. E. Thomas Air Terminal, Bakersfield, CA

5' fiberglass Junior Birdman is mounted on steel "paper airplane" which soars from a parabolic curved airstream.

The 21" bronze maquette is on loan to the Air and Space Museum (a member of the Smithsonian Museum) in Balboa Park, San Diego CA.

The Junior Birdman club was created by Wm. Randolph Hearst on the occasion of Lindbergh's solo flight over the Atlantic.  Hearst wanted to encourage boys and girls to be "air-minded."

"Up in the air, Junior Birdman.
Up in the air, upside down. . .
Up in the air, Junior Birdman,
Keep your feet up off the ground."

14 Bronze bas reliefs 12 x 15" with the exception of
Station 12 which is 30 x 36.     I was instructed to include children in the compositions whenever it seemed possible.

Each station is 19" above the ground making them available for the blind to read with fingertips.  The path is wheelchair accessible.
